Sep 30
3 min read

💧 Keep returning to God’s presence and His Word. A life of faith grows through daily dependence on Jesus and willingness to follow Him.

🛡️ Day 5 of 5: The Power of the Armor — The Shield of Faith

đź“– Scripture

Matthew 16:24 (NIV, excerpt)

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

🪞 Reflection

Our need for God does not disappear when life becomes quiet.

We may turn to Him quickly during a crisis, then become distracted when the pressure eases. Prayer gets postponed. Our Bible remains closed. We begin making choices without asking for His guidance.

Faith belongs in those ordinary moments too.

Pastor Sonny used the image of a shield soaked before battle to illustrate the importance of remaining close to God. The spiritual invitation is to keep returning to His presence and allowing His Word to shape our lives.

We do not manufacture faith through a perfect routine. We depend on Jesus, who meets us with grace and teaches us to follow Him. Prayer, Scripture and fellowship help us keep our attention on Him.

That closeness prepares us to obey.

In Matthew 16:24, Jesus calls His disciples to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Him. Following Him involves surrender. We bring our preferences, habits and desires under His leadership, trusting that His way is good.

Today, that may mean forgiving someone, speaking honestly, releasing a habit or serving when it costs us something. Faith becomes visible as we choose obedience.

The sermon also pointed to God clothing Adam and Eve after their sin. That picture reminds us to approach Him with our need rather than hiding behind shame. We can confess, receive His grace and begin walking faithfully again.

Ask yourself:

đź’§ What has been crowding out time with God?

đź“– How can I give His Word greater attention this week?

✝️ What desire or habit do I need to surrender to Jesus?

👣 What is the next step of obedience He has made clear?

Stay close to your Savior. Let His grace draw you back and His Word guide the way you live.

đź’ˇ Daily dependence on Jesus prepares us to trust Him and follow where He leads.

🎙️ From the Sermon

Pastor Sonny used the imagery of wood, leather and water to point toward the cross, God’s covering and spiritual renewal. He called the church to keep its faith fixed on Jesus and closed with this response: “Lord, be my shield. Lord, equip my shield. Lord, help me to take up my shield.”

🙏 Prayer

Father, draw my attention back to You.

Help me make room for Your Word and respond to Your voice. Thank You for meeting my failures with grace and calling me to a life of obedience.

Jesus, teach me to surrender what keeps me from following You. Be my shield, equip me and help me take up the shield of faith each day.

Amen.
