🕊️ Day 3 of 5: Know My Anxious Thoughts

Updated: Jul 22

🧠 Let God Test the Thought

The spirit of fear drives; the Spirit of God leads.

đź“– Scripture

Psalm 139:23b; 2 Timothy 1:7; 2 Corinthians 10:5

“Test me and know my anxious thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23b (NLT)

🪞 Reflection

Anxiety rarely stays in one category. It attaches itself to finances, relationships, parenting, leadership, commitment, people’s opinions, church life, health, and the future. A fearful thought enters the mind, gathers imagined evidence, and begins driving decisions before we realize it has taken the wheel.

David does not hide his anxiety from God. He invites God to test it. A battery test reveals whether a battery carries the power it claims to hold. In the same way, God’s truth exposes whether a thought can carry the weight we have placed on it.

🔋 Does this thought agree with God’s character?

đź“– Does it align with His Word?

🕊️ Is it leading me with peace and wisdom, or driving me with panic and urgency?

🎯 What action does this thought produce?

Scripture says God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. Fear drives. It pushes, rushes, threatens, and demands control. The Spirit of God leads. He may correct or challenge us, but His leadership carries truth, love, clarity, and a sound mind.

Paul teaches us to take thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ. He also tells us to direct our minds toward what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Peace does not come from pretending anxious thoughts do not exist. It grows as those thoughts are brought into Christ’s presence and tested by truth.

The monastic practice called statio is a deliberate pause—a moment to become aware of God’s presence again. Before moving into the next task, conversation, or decision, we stop and remember: God is here. God knows. God leads.

Ask yourself:

🚨 Which thought has been driving me?

🧪 Does it pass the test of Scripture?

⏸️ Where can I create a holy pause today?

🕯️ What true and life-giving thought can replace it?

You do not have to obey every thought that enters your mind. Pause. Invite God into the anxious place. Let His Spirit lead you back to power, love, self-discipline, and peace.

🎙️ From the Sermon

“The Spirit of fear drives; the Spirit of God leads.”

🙏 Prayer

God of peace, test my anxious thoughts. Expose every fear that has been driving my choices, and teach me to recognize the steady leadership of Your Spirit. Help me take my thoughts captive, dwell on what is true, and practice awareness of Your presence today. Amen.

✍️ Today’s Action

Practice statio three times today. Stop for sixty seconds, breathe slowly, and say, “God, You are here. Lead me.” Write down the anxious thought and the truth that answers it.

The thought driving me:

Does it agree with God’s truth?

The truth I will think upon:
