🔥 Refuse to Host Fear

The fire can refine you without defining you.

📖 Scripture

1 Peter 4:12 (NLT)“Don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.”

🪞 Reflection

A crucible is a container designed to withstand extreme heat. Raw metal is placed inside so impurities can rise and be removed. Other materials may be added to create greater strength, durability, and resistance. The fire does not merely make the metal hot; under the refiner’s care, it makes the metal useful.

Peter calls some seasons “fiery trials.” They expose what ordinary days can hide: fear, pride, unbelief, unhealthy attitudes, and patterns of sin. Exposure can feel uncomfortable, but it can also become mercy. God reveals what weakens us so He can remove it, heal it, and add what will make us more like Christ.

🔥 The crucible is not evidence that the Refiner has abandoned the metal. His presence is the reason the process has purpose.

The sermon highlights the word translated “surprised,” connected to xenizó—a word that can carry the sense of receiving or hosting. In a fiery trial, startling thoughts may knock at the door: “God has forgotten me.” “This will destroy me.” “Nothing will ever change.” A thought may arrive without permission, but you do not have to give it a room.

🚪 Fear may knock. You do not have to host it.

🌫️ Doubt may appear. You do not have to entertain it.

🗣️ Unbelief may speak. You can answer it with truth.

Ask yourself:

🪞 What is this season revealing in me?

🧹 What impurity might God be inviting me to release?

🛡️ What quality—faith, humility, patience, courage—does He want to strengthen?

🏠 Which fearful thought have I allowed to live in my mind?

Refining is not rejection. The Refiner watches the process, controls the heat, and knows what the finished work can become. Let the fire remove what cannot go with you and deepen what reflects Jesus.

Refiner, stay close to me in this fiery season. Reveal what needs to be removed, and add what will make me strong, useful, and more like Jesus. Teach me not to host fear, doubt, or unbelief. Let my life increasingly reflect Your face. Amen.
