📖 Scripture

Acts 20:35 (KJV)

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

🪞 Reflection

It is difficult to receive with a closed hand.

It is also difficult to receive when our hands are already full of what we refuse to release.

In the sermon, Pastor Sonny used a simple picture: a person cannot catch a ball with a clenched fist. An open hand is able to release, but it is also positioned to receive.

That picture reveals something deeper about trust.

💵 We often hold tightly to money because it represents security.

🛡️ We hold tightly to our plans because they make us feel in control.

📦 We hold tightly to possessions because we fear we may not have enough later.

But generosity loosens fear’s grip on our hearts. It reminds us that what is in our hand is not our source. God is.

An open hand does not mean careless living. Scripture calls us to wisdom, planning, and faithful stewardship. An open hand means that everything we manage remains available to the One who entrusted it to us.

Generosity begins when we stop asking, “How much can I keep?” and begin asking, “God, what do You want to do through what You have placed in my hands?”

Sometimes the greatest obstacle to expansion is not a lack of resources. It is our unwillingness to release the resources we already have.

We may tell ourselves:

⏳ I will give when I have more.

📊 I will become generous when my margins improve.

💰 I will trust God after I receive the raise.

Yet faithfulness is learned with what we have now. If generosity only begins when giving becomes easy, it may never begin at all.

Jesus does not measure generosity by comparison. He looks at the heart. He sees whether our hands are open, whether our trust is growing, and whether we are willing to obey.

Ask yourself:

✊ What am I holding too tightly?

🤲 What has God asked me to release?

😟 Is fear making my financial decisions, or is faith shaping them?

🌱 How could what is in my hand become seed for God’s purpose?

God is not trying to empty your life of purpose. He is freeing your heart from the illusion that you are your own provider.

💡 Open hands are a declaration: “God, I trust what is in Your hands more than what is in mine.”

Pastor Sonny illustrated that giving requires us to open our hands, and open hands are also the posture in which we are ready to receive.

🙏 Prayer

Father, everything I have comes from You.

Expose the fear, greed, or self-reliance that causes me to hold too tightly. Give me wisdom to steward well and courage to release whatever You ask me to give.

Let generosity become worship. Keep my heart open, my hands open, and my trust anchored in You.

Amen.
